Pet Euthanasia Services

Pet Euthanasia Services

They’ve given us endless love and loyalty throughout their lives…

…however, when our pets need our help at the end of their lives, we’re the ones who are called on to be brave. It takes courage to pick up the phone and it takes selflessness and a stronger kind of love to give them permission to transition beyond their failing bodies.

None of us are ever ready to say goodbye, but when their time  of need inevitably comes, White Whiskers can help make your friend’s passing as gentle, loving and kind as possible. Our staff has years of experience guiding pet owners, like you, through this hardest of transitions. Our in-home service ensures that you and your animal remain in comfortable, familiar surroundings without the stress or trauma of transporting an ailing pet.

We were shown so much grace and care by White Whiskers, and we really believe that this is a company that does the right thing, where the people really care for the client and their beloved animals.

Sunset Visit Information

What is involved in a Sunset Visit?

Our Sunset Visit is our at-home euthanasia appointment where we provide a peaceful and gentle transitional experience for you and your pet in the comfort of your own home.

  • We begin with an unobtrusive physical exam while our doctor asks questions regarding your pet’s history and answers any questions you might have. (30 min)
  • Next is the tranquility period where pain and anxiety are addressed through the initial administration of medicine to your pet. (15 min)
  • The final stage of the procedure is free of pain and fear as the second administration of medicine allows your pet to peacefully pass. (5 min)

The Sunset Visit averages approximately 1 hour in total, although these times can vary slightly based on the needs of the pet and their people.

What happens after the procedure?

For those who wish for White Whiskers to facilitate cremation services for your pet, once the Sunset has concluded, your doctor will quietly step out to give you space and time to grieve privately. While outside, we will prepare a comfortable bed in our vehicle for transport to the cremation facility.

After a time, your doctor will assist in getting your pet all tucked in to their final car ride. It is requested that for large breed dogs, a family member be available to help the doctor with this transport to their vehicle. It’s alright if no such help is available, but it may require an additional fee to have a care technician assist with the lifting.

For those who wish to pursue aftercare on their own, once the initial visit has concluded, the doctor will quietly step out and leave your family in peace.

Are cremation services available?

White Whiskers offer cremation services through Lasting Paws Pet Memorial Services. Their cremation options include:

  • Individual Cremation (most common)
Individual cremation provides you with the opportunity to keep your pet’s cremated remains as a permanent and personal keepsake. When you choose individual cremation, your treasured pet is placed into the crematory and separated from the other pets with partitions. When the cremation process is complete, Lasting Paws ensures that you receive only the cremated remains of your pet, returned to you in a carved wooden urn.
  • Communal Cremation
With communal cremation, your pet is gently placed into the crematory together with other pets. Because no cremated remains are returned to you when you choose a communal cremation, you may wish to consider one of our personalized memorial paw prints as a timeless remembrance.
  • Private Cremation
Private cremation is similar to individual cremation except that  your treasured pet will be the only pet in the cremation chamber during the cremation process. When the cremation process is complete, Lasting Paws ensures that you receive only the cremated remains of your pet.

What memorial options are available?

Lasting Paws Pet Memorial Service offers a variety of memorial options which White Whiskers can assist in facilitating for those not opting for self-directed aftercare.

Clay paw prints are available in two colors of clay: white and terracotta (terracotta pictured). Each paw print proudly features your pet’s name.

Ink prints are available of your pet’s paw or their nose. Each impression is lovingly made on high quality paper.

We have amazing artistic talent in the Colorado Springs region. White Whiskers has worked hard to establish a database of talented artists who offer pet portrait commissions through a variety of mediums.

Do you offer Sunset Visits outside of the home?

There are different reasons why we sometimes wish to say goodbye outside of the home. Some pets have a special trail or park that’s meaningful to them. Some of our pet parents just need a bit of spatial separation from where the euthanasia takes place. In these cases, we’re happy to help.

Destination Sunset Visits are special appointment types that are arranged at the location of your choosing. We do offer this service for an additional charge as it generally requires a bit of leg work on our part to help schedule and facilitate the visit. Please be aware that due to the added complexities of providing Destination Sunsets, same day appointments are often unavailable so please plan ahead if you think this option might be right for you.

Sunset Pricing Information

How much does a Sunset Visit cost?

Our pricing is based on 3 primary factors:

  • Your pet’s weight
  • Your home location
  • Your desired aftercare

We don’t believe in surprises. As a result, our prices are fixed and will never result in an amount that wasn’t previously discussed with you. Additional memorial items or add-on services (i.e. after hours charges) are the only deviations from that rule.

Why is a Sunset priced the way it is?

We’ve priced our Sunset Visit to be as accessible as possible for our clients because we strongly believe in what we do and want to be able to provide this service for as many people as possible. When you comparison shop, don’t be fooled by our competitors that they offer a superior service because of their higher prices. We are a local company who cares about nurturing our community. And because we don’t have to worry about paying for corporate offices, we’re able to keep our prices lower for you.

That doesn’t mean that what we do is cheap. Unfortunately, while we would love to offer this service for far less, the work we do is sensitive, important and cannot be rushed. As a result, we are a low volume practice which allows us to take extra time with you and your pet. We are constantly reviewing ways to bring down costs for you to help you better give the gift of this service to your own pets.

We do not believe in charging you for work that we don’t do. As a result, we are able to offer cremation services (at our practice discount) for far below the industry standard. We also do not charge a commission for memorial items ordered through us. We wish they weren’t so expensive too (even if they do a really good job on them).

We do have to be compensated for our time. Unlike regular mobile veterinary appointments, many of our Sunset Visits are same day  appointments and can lead our doctors to zig zagging across town. While Colorado Springs addresses are not charged a travel fee, addresses outside of the Colorado Springs city limits often are in order for us to provide service beyond to those who need us in the plains, mountains and beyond. For those charged a travel fee, we appreciate your understanding.
